Holy Cross Church

The Heilig Kreuz church is the Roman Catholic church of Burgholzhausen vor der Höhe in the Hochtaunuskreis in southern Hesse .

history

Alliance coat of arms Ingelheim / Echter and Dalberg, named for Franz Adolf Dietrich von Ingelheim Echter von und zu Mespelbrunn (1659–1742) and wife Ursula Chamberlain von Worms Freiin von Dalberg (1668–1730) at the church

Between 1536 and 1540 the Reformation was introduced in Burgholzhausen under the Counts of Stolberg - Königstein . The following sovereigns were also Protestants. In 1702 the Catholic barons of Ingelheim acquired the place. From 1710 their efforts for a counter-reformation began. In 1712, a Catholic service was held again for the first time in the village. These efforts were made more difficult not only by the resistance of the population, but also by the fact that the church in Burgholzhausen was a branch church of the church in Seulberg . Seulberg, however, belonged to the (Protestant) Landgraviate of Hessen-Homburg . The landgrave therefore made use of the right of church supervision.

Initially, Franz Adolf Dietrich von Ingelheim pursued the plan to demolish the dilapidated Protestant church and build a Catholic church there. This should also be used as a simultaneous church by the Lutherans. Ingelheim was unable to assert itself with this plan, and so in 1716 the foundation stone was laid for its own Catholic church. Part of the abandoned village fortifications next to the Ingelheimer Amtshof was chosen as the building site. However, the construction that had started was destroyed by Hesse-Homburg troops in order to enforce the right of church supervision. The following legal disputes ended in a recess : Both religious communities should be allowed to build their own churches in the future.

In 1717 construction was therefore resumed under the direction of master mason Johann Wilhelm Dettler. In 1718 the church was consecrated to which the church in Kloppenheim was assigned as a branch church . Later the churches in Okarben , Petterweil and Rodheim in front of the height became branch churches of Burgholzhausen.

The organ was restored at the end of the 1990s. In 2017 the church was completely renovated at a cost of € 300,000.

Building description

Back of the church

The design of the church is unusual and is reminiscent of the style of Louis Remy de la Fosse , who is partly attributed to the plans in literature. The single- bay nave leads over the transept to a semicircular closed choir . The church is brightly plastered and is crowned by a six-sided bell tower under a hood. The sides are structured by very high church windows. Above the two-winged entrance door there is an alliance coat of arms of the builder and above it a niche with a figure of the risen Jesus.

The high altar of the church dates from the years 1720 to 1725, the font from 1720. In 1836 the existing organ was replaced by the current organ. It comes from Bernhard Dreymann's workshop . The gallery was built in 1823, the colored glass windows in neo-rococo style in 1912.

Outdoor facilities

Wayside cross

Next to the church is the Catholic cemetery. There is a crossroads on it. Actually this should be placed on the street opposite the church. The protest of the Lutheran population is directed against this. Landgrave Wilhelm VIII of Hessen-Kassel forbade the installation by decree in 1764. The Catholics therefore placed the cross in the cemetery.
