Ecomuseo dell'Alabastro
The Ecomuseo dell'Alabastro (Alabaster Museum ) is a museum in Volterra that presents the history of the extraction and processing of alabaster in the Volterra area from ancient times to the present day. The museum opened on April 12, 2003.
Location and exhibition concept
The museum is housed in the tower house of the medieval Palazzo Minucci-Solaini, adjacent to the municipal art collection (Pinacoteca Comunale). In the area around Volterra, Castellina Marittima and Santa Luce has been since at least the 6th century BC. Chr. Alabaster mined and processed.
The museum exhibits works from ancient times, especially by the Etruscans , to contemporary artists. The Ecomuseo dell'Alabastro also includes alabaster quarries in the area around Volterra. The Ecomuseum is thematically divided into three different sub-areas: In Volterra, the focus is on the history of processing, marketing and sales of alabaster, while in the Museum of Castellina Marittima the area of alabaster extraction is examined in more detail. In Santa Luce, in the nearby Marmolaio valley, you can visit an old underground mining site for alabaster. High quality alabaster was extracted in the Cave del Massetto.
Recently, the museum was able to take over a complete sculpting workshop from the established sculptor family Pagni from Volterra.
