The Sankt Josef Church is the Roman Catholic church in Herzberg am Harz , a town in the Göttingen district in Lower Saxony . The church is a parish church in the Nörten-Osterode deanery of the Hildesheim diocese . It is named after Saint Joseph of Nazareth and has the address Magisterberg 6 .

history

In the first half of the 16th century, Philip I introduced the Reformation in the principality of Grubenhagen , to which Herzberg belonged at the time . This made the population of Herzberg Evangelical Lutheran .

In the 19th century a Catholic parish was formed again in Herzberg. In 1857 a plot of land was purchased and since 1858 Catholic church records have been kept in Herzberg . From 1893 to 1895 the church was built on the property. Her consecration took place on August 4 or 15, 1895 . On June 2, 1898, the parish of Herzberg am Harz was established.

In 1945 the building suffered damage to the roof, choir and windows from the explosion of a nearby dynamite factory and from artillery fire.

In 1994/95 the church was extensively renovated. A large window was installed in the apse , and changes were also made to the interior.

Since March 1, 2004, the church has belonged to the then newly founded Nörten-Osterode deanery , previously it belonged to the Osterode deanery. Since November 1, 2006, the parish of St. Josef has also included the St. Hildegard Church, built in 1958/59 in Hattorf am Harz , around 11 kilometers away , after which the two parishes had already formed a pastoral care unit several years earlier .

Annunciation

The single - nave neo-Gothic church stands on a small hill near the federal highway 243 at a height of around 240 meters above sea level . The local architect Peters created the preliminary design, which Christoph Hehl revised and implemented. Its square-shaped tower on the north facade can be seen from afar.

The chancel is dominated by a stained glass window with a crucifix in front of it . Statues to the left and right of the chancel show Mary and Joseph. Other statues, in front of which sacrificial candles can be placed, represent the Annunciation . A Pietà is also part of the furnishings of the church.

The parish also includes the St. Josef daycare center next to the church and the cemetery on Lönsstrasse.
