The Maria Königin Church , also known as St. Marien for short , is the Catholic church in Wittingen , a town in the northeast of the Gifhorn district . The after Marie Title Mary Queen named Church is the northernmost church in the deanery Wolfsburg Helmstedt and is located at Schützenstraße 5, her eponymous parish belongs to the Diocese of Hildesheim .

With the introduction of the Reformation in the 16th century, the population and St. Stephen's Church in Wittingen became Evangelical-Lutheran .

It was not until the 1930s that Catholic services were occasionally held in Wittingen from St. Bernward in Gifhorn . Wittingen only got its own local Catholic clergyman after the Second World War . A Catholic parish was established in Wittingen in 1946, and its services were initially held in rented rooms.

In 1953 an emergency church was built at Celler Strasse 12 through the conversion of an industrial hall, already under the patronage of “St. Mary Queen ”. Their benediction took place on November 28, 1954 . The Wittingen parish was established on August 1, 1956.

On March 26, 1972 ( Palm Sunday ) the foundation stone for today's church was laid by Vicar General Adalbert Sendker. At that time Alois Frölich was pastor of the Wittingen parish, to which about 850 members belonged. About 500 Catholics came from the then urban area of ​​Wittingen and about 350 Catholics from 43 surrounding villages. On November 26, 1972, the church was blessed by Bishop Heinrich Maria Janssen . On October 1, 1980, the parish of Wittingen was raised to a parish. In 2002 the parish rooms at the front of the church were enlarged by an extension.

Since November 1, 2006, the parish of Wittingen has also included the Church of the Assumption of Mary in Wesendorf . Also since November 1, 2006, the church has belonged to the then newly formed dean's office Wolfsburg-Helmstedt, previously it belonged to the dean's office in Wolfsburg.

The church was built as a prefabricated concrete church with a free-standing bell tower according to plans by Josef Fehlig from the diocesan building department.

A number of other churches of this type were built in the Diocese of Hildesheim, for example in 1969 in Altenwalde and Sudmerberg , 1970 in Dungelbeck , Meckelfeld and Poggenhagen , 1971 in Afferde , Hohegeiß , Luthe , Meine , Schwanewede and Winsen (Aller) , 1972 in Gifhorn , Ronnenberg and Stederdorf , 1974 in Vorwerk , 1975 in Dransfeld , Münchehof and Rodenberg , and 1976 in Rhüden .

The Wittingen Church is around 82 meters above sea level and has around 136 seats. The artistic equipment was taken over by Hanns Joachim Klug in 1972 , and the lead glass windows were designed by Josef Niehaus ( Wessum ) in the same year . The back wall of the chancel is dominated by a crucifix . The furnishings include statues of Saint Mary , Joseph of Nazareth and Christophorus . There are also 14 stations of the cross , an image of Jesus from Divine Mercy and a baptismal font . A confessional is set into a wall.

The organ was built in 1977 by Gebrüder Hillebrand Orgelbau . The slider chest instrument has 12 stops on two manuals and a pedal .
