Assumption of Mary is the Catholic church in Wesendorf , a municipality in the Gifhorn district in Lower Saxony . The church, named after the Assumption of Mary in Heaven , is located at Wiesenstrasse 2 and belongs to the Wittingen parish of St. Marien , in the Wolfsburg-Helmstedt deanery of the Hildesheim diocese .

history

In the 16th century, the population in the Gifhorn area became Evangelical-Lutheran through the introduction of the Reformation . The village of Wesendorf only emerged in this century, initially as a small settlement. In the second half of the 1930s, the population of Wesendorf rose sharply due to the establishment of an air base . As early as 1938 the diocese of Hildesheim tried to hold Catholic services in Wesendorf, but this was forbidden by the Nazi rulers at the time .

As a result of the Second World War , the population of Wesendorf continued to grow due to the influx of displaced persons from the eastern regions of the German Empire . As a result, the Catholic parish was founded in 1948. The church was built in 1951 and on June 29 of the same year it was benedicted by Bishop Joseph Godehard Machens .

Since November 1st, 2006 the church belongs to the parish of St. Marien in Wittingen. Also since November 1, 2006, the church has belonged to the then newly formed dean's office Wolfsburg-Helmstedt, previously it belonged to the dean's office in Wolfsburg.

Architecture and equipment

The outwardly inconspicuous church building is crowned by a small roof turret with a small bell in it . The cross on the roof turret does not have two cross bars, as usual, but three. A cross bar points in every direction, and from every direction it is recognizable as a cross. The church is around 64 meters above sea level and has 83 seats. On the back wall behind the altar there is a crucifixion group , the painting on the opposite wall depicts the Assumption of Mary. The icon “Mary with the Child” is a gift from a former pastor. The chanting of the church service is supported by an electronic instrument. In the small Chapel of Mary there is a statue of Mary, a picture of Jesus from Divine Mercy and a confessional . A small community hall is located in the basement.
