Manfred Grieger

Manfred Grieger (* 1960 ) is a German historian . Until 2016 he was chief historian at Volkswagen AG . Since 2007 he has also been a lecturer at the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen , where he was appointed professor in 2018.

Life

After training as a bookseller , Grieger began studying history, Eastern European history, journalism and communication studies at the Ruhr University in Bochum in 1980 , which he completed in 1986. He then worked as a research assistant at Hans Mommsen's chair there , where he participated in a research project on the history of the Volkswagen factory . In 1993 he moved to Heidelberg as a research assistant to the working group for modern social history . In 1994, Grieger got a job at the Emschertal Museum in Herne. In 1996 he was awarded a doctorate at the Faculty of History of the Ruhr University Bochum. phil. doctorate , his dissertation was entitled The Volkswagenwerk and its workers in the Third Reich 1933-1948 .

In 1998, Grieger was initially a research associate at the Hannah Arendt Institute for Totalitarian Research at the Technical University of Dresden , where he researched the history of Dresdner Bank , and then moved to Volkswagen Aktiengesellschaft in August 1998 , where he worked in corporate communications until October 31, 2016 directed historical communication. In August 2016, he criticized the processing of the Nazi past of the group subsidiary Audi . He criticized "a study on the Nazi entanglements of the group subsidiary Audi as technically inadequate and played down", which is why there were disagreements with the management of the Volkswagen group. Some historians criticized Volkswagen's approach and protested against their dealings with their chief historian.

In June 2018, Grieger was commissioned by the Gifhorn City Council to review the history of the city of Gifhorn from 1850 to 2010.

When Group heiress Verena Bahlsen came under fire in May 2019 for a statement about forced labor at Bahlsen , Grieger was commissioned to write a company history.
