Life

Verena Bahlsen is the great-granddaughter of the Bahlsen founder Hermann Bahlsen , her father is Werner Michael Bahlsen . She studied communication and management in London and New York, but dropped out without a degree. As a 20-year-old, she received almost a quarter of the shares in the family business, as did her three siblings. Bahlsen currently lives in Berlin.

Company "Stupidly Simple"

Since 2015 she has been the managing director of the company Stupidly Simple based in Hanover. The company operates the Berlin restaurant "Hermann's" and is a 100% subsidiary of Bahlsen GmbH & Co. KG . The name Hermann’s can be traced back to the first name of Verena Bahlsen’s great-grandfather Hermann Bahlsen.

Media appearances and episodes

Regarding statements by Kevin Kühnert ( SPD ) critical of capitalism , Verena Bahlsen said in a public speech in May 2019 in the presence of Kühnert: “I am a capitalist. I want to make money and buy sailing yachts with my dividends and stuff ”. She was heavily criticized for making this statement. In response to indications from critics that the Bahlsen company generated a significant part of its income during the Second World War , during which around 200 forced laborers were employed in the company, Bahlsen replied: “That was before my time and we paid the forced laborers just like them Germans and treated them well ”. After this statement, Bahlsen was exposed to even more violent criticism. As a result, she stated on the Bahlsen website that she was sorry for the "careless statements". She labeled them a "mistake" and apologized to those who hurt her feelings.

As a result of Verena Bahlsen's statements, the company's history was examined in more detail by the news magazine Der Spiegel . This research has revealed an even deeper involvement of the company in the Nazi regime than previously known. The company managers at the time, Hans , Werner and Klaus Bahlsen, were all members of the NSDAP and promoted the SS .

In the course of research by the weekly newspaper Die Zeit , it turned out that Verena Bahlsen's statement about the level of the wages for forced laborers does not correspond to the facts. The average gross weekly wage of a German worker at that time was 44 Reichsmarks. However, the Bahlsen forced laborers were only paid five to ten Reichsmarks per week, according to the evaluation of Bahlsen wage cards.
