Jörg Heinrich Schmitt (born August 30, 1967 in Marburg ) is a German journalist .

Life

Schmitt grew up in Biedenkopf in central Hesse and went to school there. After graduating from high school and completing his community service in the Hessian hinterland , he volunteered in 1988 for the Lahn-Dill newspaper group and their local daily newspaper Hinterländer Anzeiger . From November 1989 to June 1994 he studied journalism, economic policy and law at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich and graduated with the title of Diplom-Journalist (University) .

Then Schmitt worked for a year as an editor at the now discontinued German branch of the US magazine Forbes . From August 1995 to December 2000 he was an editor in the economic department of Stern and from January 2001 to August 2003 he was editor of Manager Magazin . In September 2003 he became editor of the news magazine Der Spiegel . He was mainly concerned with investigating and uncovering irregularities and affairs in business and sport: suspected money laundering against the ex-boss of Reemtsma , bribery at IKEA, investment fraud, money laundering, corruption at Siemens , Kirch bankruptcy, Jürgen Emig and bribery at Hessischer Rundfunk, Reiner Calmund and his farewell at Bayer Leverkusen, broken axles on the ICE , economic spies from China, bribery at handball and more.
