The Church of St. John the Baptist was the Catholic church in Stederdorf , a district of Peine in Lower Saxony . She belonged to the parish to the holy angels with seat in Peine, in the deanery Braunschweig of the diocese Hildesheim . The church named after St. John the Baptist was at Teichstrasse 11. The nearest Catholic church is now four kilometers away in Peine.

history

After Catholic refugees and expellees had settled in Stederdorf, which had been a Protestant since the Reformation , as a result of the Second World War , Catholic services were held in the Protestant St. Petrus Church from 1946 onwards.

The Church of St. John the Baptist was built on the site of a burned-down farm that the Church had acquired. On November 20, 1971, the foundation stone was laid by Vicar General Adalbert Sendker. On June 24, 1972, St. John's Day , the consecration followed by the auxiliary bishop emeritus Friedrich Maria Rintelen from the Archdiocese of Paderborn . He represented the sick Hildesheim Bishop Heinrich Maria Janssen . At that time about 450 Catholics lived in Stederdorf. For cost reasons, the bells did not follow until 1985 .

On July 8th, 2008 the profanation was carried out by Auxiliary Bishop Hans-Georg Koitz . The building was sold to the city of Peine and is now a municipal day-care center. The St. Angel bell came to Klein Ilsede as a cemetery bell , some of the inventory went to Poland.

Architecture and equipment

The church was built according to the plans of Josef Fehlig , executed as a prefabricated concrete church with a free-standing bell tower, and was about 70 meters above sea level .

A number of other churches of this type were built in the Diocese of Hildesheim, for example in 1969 in Altenwalde and Sudmerberg , 1970 in Dungelbeck , Meckelfeld and Poggenhagen , 1971 in Afferde , Hohegeiß , Luthe , Meine , Schwanewede and Winsen (Aller) , 1972 in Gifhorn , Ronnenberg and Wittingen , 1974 in Vorwerk , 1975 in Dransfeld , Münchehof and Rodenberg , and 1976 in Rhüden .

The altar , tabernacle and other furnishings of the Stederdorf Church were designed in 1971/72 by Paul König (Hildesheim). The picture on the back wall of the altar showed the Heavenly Jerusalem , parts of which are now in the Friedrich-Spee-Haus in Peine. The statue of the Virgin Mary was a replica of a Madonna from around 1500. The Stations of the Cross , consecrated in 1979, were created by various parishioners in 1977/78, based on the Stations of the Cross in the parish church of St. Francis de Sales in Vienna . The patron saint of the church, Saint John the Baptist, was depicted on a window. The three bells (Holy Family, Hl. Angel and Hl. Hedwig) were cast in 1985 by Petit & Gebr. Edelbrock and consecrated by Heinrich Maria Janssen.
