The church in Kirchweg 7, named after the holy Bishop Bernward von Hildesheim , belongs to the parish of St. Altfrid Gifhorn / Meine in the Wolfsburg-Helmstedt dean's office of the Hildesheim diocese . history

Before the First World War , the number of Catholics in Gifhorn, which has been Evangelical-Lutheran since the Reformation, grew to such an extent that a church building plot was acquired. The construction of the church began in 1914 and was consecrated on August 29, 1915 as the first Catholic church in the Gifhorn district after the Reformation by Canon Busse. At first it belonged to the parish of St. Ludwig with its seat in Celle . In 1926/27 a rectory was built next to the church.

In 1929 the Catholic Chapel of St. Michael was built in Fallersleben as a branch ; it was looked after by the pastor from St. Bernward until 1940, as was the Maria im Moor chapel , which was also built in Neudorf-Platendorf in 1929 and which existed until 1945 or 1947 .

From August 1, 1956, St. Bernward was an independent parish, which was raised to a parish on June 1, 1960. Also in 1960 the St. Maria Goretti chapel belonging to St. Bernward was built in Meinersen , and in 1977 it was replaced by a newly built church. In 1974 a rectory was built behind the rectory. In 1996 the pastoral care unit Gifhorn-Meine was formed with the churches of St. Altfrid and St. Bernward in Gifhorn as well as St. Andreas in Meine and St. Maria Goretti in Meinersen. On August 1, 2004, the pastoral care unit became today's parish of St. Altfrid Gifhorn / Meine , comprising the four churches of the former pastoral care unit. Since November 1, 2006, the church has belonged to the then newly founded dean's office in Wolfsburg-Helmstedt, previously it belonged to the dean's office in Wolfsburg. In 2014 the former subsidiary church of St. Maria Goretti in Meinersen was profaned .

On August 29, 2015, the 100th anniversary of the consecration of the St. Bernward Church was celebrated with a solemn high mass and a colorful parish festival in the parish garden.

Architecture and equipment

Bernward Cross
Court cross

The church was designed by Richard Herzig as a single-nave, east-facing hall building with a cross-shaped floor plan and a side tower. It is around 65 meters above sea level, around 12 meters above Gifhorn city center and has 220 seats. A representation of the Bernward Cross is attached to the west gable . The stained glass windows from 1967 were designed by Claus Kilian and executed by the glass painting company Oidtmann . On the back wall of the chancel there is a crucifixion group , including the tabernacle , and next to the chancel there is a statue of the Virgin Mary . The baptismal font and a statue of St. Bernward are located in the two side chapels . There is a statue of the Archangel Michael under the organ gallery . The confessional , which also had its place there, was removed during a renovation in 2018. In front of the church there is a hall cross and a portrait of Mary. This is a reprint of the painting Refuge of sinners by the Italian painter Luigi Crosio , which is also in all Schoenstatt chapels .

organ

The organ was built in 1887 in the workshop of Friedrich Ladegast for the Masonic Lodge in Braunschweig . As a result of the closure of the lodge, the organ was installed in Gifhorn in 1937 and replaced a previously used harmonium . In 1975, Günter Graun from Burgdorf carried out a renovation, during which parts of the historical substance were destroyed. In 1998 the organ was restored by the Stockmann Brothers organ building company and returned to its original state.
