Location of Wessum in the city of Ahaus

Wessum is a district of Ahaus ( Borken district , North Rhine-Westphalia ) in western Münsterland .

history

Wessum was first mentioned in a document in 1122 and is therefore one of the oldest places in the old district of Ahaus . The name Wessum originally comes from the main farm "Wesheim", which the wives of Gottfried and Otto von Cappenberg gave to the Premonstratensian monastery of Cappenberg . The primary school in Wessum still bears the name "Gottfried von Kappenberg School" today.

After the Second World War , the village and the destroyed parish church of St. Martin were rebuilt, in which there is also a passion column from the 16th century. For example, the roof turret of the church tower was hit by a bomb, it is still crooked today.

Another attraction is the oratory , built in 1510 , which has served as a war grave memorial since 1920.

On April 1, 1936, the municipalities of Dorf Wessum and parish Wessum were combined to form the new municipality of Wessum.

Until the end of 1974 Wessum was an independent municipality in the Wessum office , which also included the municipalities of Alstätte and Ottenstein . As part of the municipal regional reform in the Münster administrative district , based on the Münster / Hamm law , Wessum lost its political independence on January 1, 1975 and was assigned to the city of Ahaus .

In 2012 Wessum has approx. 4730 inhabitants.

Culture

In the competition Our village should become more beautiful , Wessum won the gold medal at the state level in 1991 and the silver medal at the federal level.

Wessum is also known as the wooden shoe village. There are still several clog makers around today .
