The house of prayer for the Passion of Christ (also: Oratorium ) is a listed Gothic chapel on the church square in Wessum , a district of Ahaus in the Borken district ( North Rhine-Westphalia ).

History and architecture

The building is a rectangular brick building with a hipped roof , which was erected in 1511 as a three-bay hall. The east side is opened like a loggia by three large pointed arches on round pillars . There are three-lane tracery windows and low, ogival passages on the sides .

The chapel has been rebuilt several times. From 1814 to 1899 it was used as living space, for this purpose the vault was expanded. During the dismantling in 1899, the cross vault was renewed.

The oratory was used as a war memorial site since 1921 and was badly damaged during World War II. An extensive renovation was carried out in 1951.
