Location of Ottenstein in the city of Ahaus

Ottenstein is a district of Ahaus in Westmünsterland .

geography

Ottenstein is about 6.5 km west of Ahaus and about 7 km from the Dutch border. Among other things, the farms Hörsteloe and Feldmark belong to Ottenstein .

history

A chapel in Ottenstein was first mentioned in 1292. The parish patron is St. George . The name Ottenstein refers to the Ottenstein Castle , which was formerly in Ottenstein. This castle was built around 1316 under the nobleman Otto von Ahaus and made of stone, which was not the rule at the moment. The castle passed to the Counts of Solms in 1325; from 1408 it was in the hands of the bishops of Munster, who expanded it into a state castle . In the 18th century the building fell into disrepair and was demolished. The parish church in Ottenstein was built from the rubble .

The southern place in front of the castle was designated as a city in 1386, expanded in the 16th century and fortified with moats. The place lost its old rights in 1623, in 1589 and 1635 it burned down after a siege.

On January 1, 1975 Ottenstein was incorporated into the city of Ahaus.

Culture and sights

The Marienkapelle is on the sports field. The plastered hall building with a three-sided end , a three-tier gable and a roof turret was built from 1791 to 1793. A renovation was made in 1894. An impressive, white-framed wooden crucifix is attached to the front wall . It dates from the second half of the 17th century.

Every year on Rose Monday there is a large carnival parade in Ottenstein. The traditional shooting festival takes place every two years, alternating with the Hörsteloe farmers. In the Hörsteloe juniper heather you can still find remnants of the original heather landscape.
