St. Nikolaus is the Roman Catholic parish church of Clausthal-Zellerfeld (Burgstätter Straße 11). It belongs to the Nörten-Osterode deanery of the Hildesheim diocese .

history

The first post-Reformation Catholic church in the entire Upper Harz was built on the site of today's church in 1870 . The royal Oberbergrat Ulrich had made great personal sacrifices for its construction and the establishment of the parish in the same year . It was a wooden church in the "Harz style", this was 13.7 × 7.35 m inside and offered space for about 60 people. She received the patronage of St. Nikolaus with reference to the place name of Clausthal. In addition to Clausthal and Zellerfeld, the surrounding communities in Altenau, Bad Grund, Buntenbock, Hahnenklee-Bockswiese, Lautenthal, Schulenberg with Festenburg and Wildemann belonged to the parish.

In the years after the Second World War, the Catholic community grew due to the influx of expellees, the establishment of barracks and an increase in the number of students, so it was decided to build a new church with a parsonage and parsonage. The foundation stone for the new church building was laid on July 17, 1960. During the construction period, the services took place in the auditorium of what was then the Clausthal Mining Academy. On December 3, 1961, the church was consecrated .

In addition to the parish, the Nikolauskirche also serves the students of the Technical University and holidaymakers. Since March 1, 2004 she has been part of the Nörten-Osterode dean's office, previously she was part of the Osterode dean's office. The parish of St. Nikolaus today also includes the churches of St. Oliver in Altenau and Maria Schnee in Hahnenklee .

Architecture and equipment

The hexagonal central building made of ocher-colored brick with a turret was built at a height of around 576 meters above sea level according to plans by Josef Fehlig . The impression of the room is determined by the three large window areas that take up one of the six walls completely, two others half and, with their figured colored glazing, bathe the room in warm light. Claus Kilian created the designs . He also designed the altar wall and the liturgical furnishings, which refer in different ways to the legend of St. Nicholas , as well as the large cross with biblical image fields on the outer wall above the entrance.

Another Catholic institution in Clausthal-Zellerfeld was the Maximilian-Kolbe-Haus student residence (Walther-Nernst-Straße 1, below the cafeteria). It was completed in the winter semester 1973/74 and offers 53 rooms. Today students of different denominations live here, but it was sold to another non-profit investor and no longer belongs to the diocese of Hildesheim.
