The Maria Schnee church , also called Maria vom Schnee or St. Marien , is the Catholic church in Hahnenklee-Bockswiese , a district of the district town of Goslar in Lower Saxony . It belongs to the parish " St. Nikolaus " with seat in Clausthal-Zellerfeld , and is the northernmost church in the deanery Nörten-Osterode and the only church in the diocese of Hildesheim that is named after the Catholic memorial day " Maria Schnee ". The church is located on the western edge of Hahnenklee, at Lautenthaler Straße 6.

history

In the 16th century the population in the Harz became Evangelical Lutheran with the introduction of the Reformation . In 1569 Hahnenklee was first mentioned in a document. In the second half of the 19th century, Hahnenklee developed from an original miners' settlement into today's tourist destination. In 1907/08 the first church in Hahnenklee was the Protestant Gustav Adolf Stave Church .

On June 17, 1928 the foundation stone was laid for the first Catholic church in Hahnenklee, the small wooden church Maria vom Schnee . The first service took place there on August 15, 1928. Before that, the St. Nicholas Church in Clausthal-Zellerfeld, built in 1870, was the closest Catholic church.

As a result of the Second World War , the number of Catholics also increased in Hahnenklee due to the influx of refugees and displaced persons from the eastern regions of the German Empire .

In 1972 the first Catholic church was demolished, and in 1974 the foundation stone for today's church was laid on its property. In 1975, the church, built with the help of the Bonifatiuswerk, was inaugurated .

Since March 1, 2004, the church has belonged to the then newly founded Nörten-Osterode deanery , previously it belonged to the Osterode deanery.

Due to declining financial resources, but also the decreasing number of priests and church members, all churches in the Diocese of Hildesheim were classified according to their future needs. At that time the church was classified as “not absolutely necessary for pastoral development”, but not intended for profanation . However, there are fears in the parish that the church could be closed.

The interior of the church, which offers around 150 seats, includes a statue of the Virgin Mary, in front of which sacrificial candles can be placed. 15 stations of the cross hang on the east wall. The organ was built in 1993 by the Stockmann brothers . The parish hall is built on the west side of the church and separated from it by folding doors , toilets can be found in the anteroom of the church. The rectory is located on the neighboring property, Lautenthaler Straße 8 .
