The Liebfrauenkirche is a Catholic parish church in the Lower Saxon episcopal city of Hildesheim . The church is named after the Maria title Our Lady and is located in the Marienburger Höhe district (Liebfrauenkirchplatz 1). Your parish belongs to the Hildesheim deanery of the Hildesheim diocese .

history

Since the city of Hildesheim expanded further south in the post-war period, the Liebfrauenkirche was built and the parish of Liebfrauen was founded. Before that, the catchment area of ​​the Liebfrauenkirche belonged to the parish of St. Joseph .

The first plans for a new church building were made in 1950. In 1954 a church building association was founded and in 1960 the church building site was acquired. The groundbreaking ceremony took place in 1962, and in 1963 the foundation stone was laid by Bishop Heinrich Maria Janssen . On August 22nd, 1964, the consecration of the newly built church took place, also by Bishop Heinrich Maria Janssen . On April 1, 1965, the church community (Kuratiegemeinde) Liebfrauen was established, to which at that time about 2,600 Catholics belonged. In 1965 the church got its first pastor, Father Adalbert Fritz († 1972). In 1984 the chancel was redesigned; Paul König designed the tabernacle, ambo and candlesticks. On June 1, 1985, the parish was elevated to a parish.

In the second half of the 1990s, the pastoral care unit consisting of the parishes of Liebfrauen , their former mother parish St. Joseph, and St. Georg in Itzum was founded, from which today's parish of Liebfrauen emerged on November 1, 2006. The number of parishioners increased from about 2600 to over 5400.

Architecture and equipment

The church was built according to plans by Josef Fehlig and is around 111 meters above sea level . An initially planned church tower was not realized. On the back wall of the sanctuary there is a crucifixion group , and the tabernacle has been integrated into the cross since 1984 . The organ was built in 1972 by the Hillebrand Orgelbau company from Altwarmbüchen . It comprises 20 sounding registers , divided into two manuals and a pedal .

  • Kindergarten Liebfrauen. The kindergarten next to the church opened in 1974 and today has 72 places.
  • KHG dormitory. The dormitory run by the diocese of Hildesheim has 96 places to live and is located near the University of Hildesheim , at Braunsberger Strasse 52. Right next to the dormitory are the rooms of the Catholic University Community (KHG).
