location

The St. Joseph Church is located southeast of Hildesheim city center at Marienburger Strasse 135, between the confluences of Mellingerstrasse and Quedlinburger Strasse, around 93 meters above sea level . The distance to the market square is around 2 km, while the Hildesheim main train station is around 3 km away. The church is easy to reach by public transport: the city bus lines 1 and 4 stop not far from it at the “Silberfundstraße” stop.

history

From the 1870s, the city of Hildesheim expanded to the south and south-east during the founding period . The Südstadt district emerged, and more and more people settled on the slopes of the Galgenberg and on the Marienburger Höhe . The Catholics among them initially belonged to the parish of St. Godehard Church . In 1911, church services were already being held in the Körnerstrasse kindergarten. As the number of inhabitants in the new residential areas increased more and more, the call for a separate church building for the south and south-east of Hildesheim became loud after the First World War .

The Catholic Church therefore bought the buildings of the former “Tivoli” restaurant, built in 1889 at Marienburger Strasse 135 in 1927, and had the former dance hall converted into a church. It was named “St. Josephskirche ”and was consecrated on July 22, 1928. The newly created community ( curate ) had around 1,000 members in 1928. Compared to other churches in Hildesheim, the church was relatively small and plain, but received two bells in 1929 and its own organ in 1931 . On April 1, 1941, the parish of St. Joseph was established, previously the church belonged to the pastoral care district of St. Joseph of the parish of St. Godehard. During the Second World War , only very little damage occurred in the area of St. Joseph's parish, and the church building remained intact. The parish had 1923 members in 1945, around 3,000 in 1953 and almost 5,200 in 1964.

In the 1960s, the church building was in poor condition, although various renovation work had already been carried out in the 1950s. After the inauguration of the Church of Our Lady on Marienburger Höhe in 1964, the parish area was divided up in 1965. Around 2600 people now belonged to St. Joseph's Church. Another renovation took place in 1965, but by 1970 the church was not usable for some time due to disrepair. Despite various renovations, the church building had to be closed permanently in 1976 due to the risk of collapse.

In October 1976 construction began on a new church building. After laying the foundation stone on March 19, 1977, it was inaugurated on June 17, 1978 by the then Bishop Heinrich Maria Janssen . On the same day the parish of St. Joseph was raised to a parish. In 1979 the church received new bells and in 1984 a new organ.

Since November 1st 2006 the church belongs to the parish of Liebfrauen, the parish of St. Joseph was dissolved.

On March 25, 2018, ZDF broadcast a live television service on Palm Sunday under the title On the Way to Jerusalem from St. Joseph's Church in Hildesheim.

architecture

In front of the church building, which is erected in north-south direction, there is a terrace with a free-standing bell tower, behind it there is a rectory and a kindergarten. From Marienburger Strasse, apart from the bell tower, the high side wall made of red clinker bricks is noticeable.

There are around 200 seats inside the church. The relatively low chancel is to the north of the building, which has brick walls and a wooden ceiling. A lot of light falls into the interior of the church through a noticeably large window on the eastern wall of the church building.

A charming contrast to the modern interior of the church is a wooden statue of St. Josef, which was made around 1650 and is located a little higher to the right of the chancel.
