St. Mary
Sanctuary

The church of St. Maria , named after the mother of Jesus , is the second Catholic church in the area of the city of Sehnde , next to St. Josef in Bolzum . It was built in 1954/55 in the street Am Papenholz 7 and consecrated on June 5, 1955. The patronage of the church is Mary Queen on August 22nd.

history

The prehistory of church building includes the Second World War and the immigration of displaced persons to western Germany. The associated mixture of denominations also led to the establishment of a local Catholic congregation in Sehnde, which has been almost exclusively Protestant since the Reformation , from 1946 onwards.

In addition to material, political obstacles stood in the way of building the church, as the local government at the time would have liked to prevent a Catholic church in the village. In contrast, the evangelical community was cooperative from the start and made its cruciform church available for special festive services, especially for First Communion . On normal Sundays, Holy Mass took place in the cemetery chapel, on weekdays in a makeshift barrack that also served as a meeting place for young people.

After long negotiations and collections, a plot of land on the western edge of the town was finally acquired and the church was built with the great help of parishioners and volunteers from Belgium ( Bauorden ).

Church building

The building by the architect Josef Fehlig from Hildesheim, located around 66 meters above sea level , is a simple, elongated hall with a raised and narrower rectangular chancel . The free-standing bell tower rises on a square floor plan with an edge length of 21 meters and is connected to the church by a corridor. The tower tapers slightly towards the top and is crowned by a three-meter-high cross made of sheet copper. In 2003 it received three new bells. The baptistery is located on the ground floor of the tower. The tower and nave are plastered in a muted white.

Interior

The furnishings of the bright church interior consist of the altar made of reddish marble, a bronze ambo with symbols of plants and evangelists, an Easter candlestick in the form of a tree of life with a snake of paradise and the tabernacle clad in gold sheet in front of a sun disc , all works by Hanns Joachim Klug . A large wooden crucifix hangs above the altar , in the nave there are the wooden sculptures of a Mother of God with a child, Saint Hedwig of Silesia and at the entrance of the miner's patroness Barbara . This, together with a miner's lamp attached to it, is reminiscent of potash mining , which was one of Sehndes main industries in the 20th century.

In 2011 two backlit windows were installed in the entrance area of the church showing the apostles Peter and Paul , also works by Hanns Joachim Klug. They come from the Magdalenenkapelle in Evern, which was profaned in 2010, and were blessed again in the presence of the artist.

The organ of the Hillebrand brothers from 1987 has 15 sounding registers distributed over two manuals and a pedal with 1120 pipes .

local community

On July 1, 1957, the parish of St. Maria Sehnde was established in the dean's office in Hanover-East of the Hildesheim diocese . Since May 1, 2007 it has been part of the newly established Hanover Regional Deanery, and since November 1, 2014 it has been part of the parish of St. Bernward in Lehrte .

The catchment area of the church includes the villages of Dolgen , Evern , Gretenberg , Haimar , Rethmar , Sehnde and Wassel . In 2014, the year the parishes were merged, around 1,600 Catholics lived there. The chapel in Evern, which previously belonged to the parish of St. Maria, was profaned in 2010 .
