St. Bernward is the Catholic Church of Lehrte . The parish church is located near the train station (Feldstrasse 8) at around 61 meters above sea level , and its catchment area includes almost 4900 Catholics. Your parish of the same name belongs to the deanery of Hanover in the diocese of Hildesheim .

The reddish brick building clearly shows the traces of its multi-stage development. If you approach from the east (Feldstrasse), you will first see the relatively modest portal front with roof turrets . Only when walking around does the overall size of the building with a spacious transept and chancel as well as several ancillary buildings appear behind the attached former rectory . Behind the St. Bernward Church there is a cemetery belonging to the community.

history

The old parish church of the farming village taught with the patronage of St. Nicholas had become Lutheran in 1531 . Since it was connected to the rail network in 1843 and expanded to become a railway junction, Lehrte experienced a stormy industrial development that also brought more and more Catholic residents to the city (1854: 12; 1900: 535). In 1889, a St. Bernward School, which still exists today as a primary school, was founded as a primary school.

In 1894 construction began on the church, which was consecrated in the following year in the name of Hildesheim Bishop Bernward . It was a small hall church in neo-Gothic shapes - today it is the entrance and eastern part.

In 1935 a large extension was started for the parish, which had grown further (consecrated on May 21, 1936 by Bishop Joseph Godehard Machens ), which adjoins the old chapel to the west and shows the sober quadratic style of that time.

In 1960 the baptistery and confessional chapel was built on the south side, and in 1993 the sacristy in the north.

In 1971 the St. Theresa branch church was built in the neighboring town of Ahlten . Since November 1, 2014, the parish has also included the churches of St. Maria (Sehnde) and St. Josef (Sehnde-Bolzum) .

Furnishing

The inside is whitewashed. The spatial impression is determined by the high, wide arch of the wall with writing tape that leads to the chancel. Among the sculptures, the colored figure of the Virgin and the Bernwards window are worth mentioning. Other depictions of saints are an Elisabeth window from 1935 and statues of Antonius of Padua , Barbara , Judas Thaddäus , Paulus and Peter .
