The church of St. Josef in the district of Bolzum (Am Anger 2) is one of two Catholic churches in the area of the city of Sehnde (the second is St. Maria ). The church named after Josef von Nazaret belongs to the parish of St. Bernward based in Lehrte , in the Hannover deanery of the Hildesheim diocese .

St. Josef was built from brick in 1897/98 according to plans by the Hildesheim architect Richard Herzig in neo-Romanesque forms and decorated with historicist ornaments. She can be seen as a prime example of this style. Her consecration took place on May 19, 1898 .

The history of the church and parish is closely related to local history. Since Bolzum had passed from the prince-bishopric of Hildesheim to Guelph rule as a result of the Hildesheim collegiate feud , the old Bolzum St. Nicolai Church and with it the population became Protestant during the Reformation .

With the restoration of the large monastery in 1643 Bolzum came back to the Hildesheim chair, and the Bolzum manor was transferred to a Catholic baron. For his family and servants, catholic services were held from 1682 in the manor house and later in a manor building specially prepared for this purpose. In 1764 Bolzum was raised to a parish . But it wasn't until 130 years later that z. Partly with state funds in the course of the equalization of secularization , today's small church will be built.

The area of the parish originally extended over Sehnde and Lehrte to Burgdorf and Uetze . Little by little, new Catholic churches and parishes emerged in this area, most recently as a result of the flow of displaced people after the Second World War . In 2014, before the parish merger , the villages of Bolzum, Müllingen , Ummeln , Wehmingen and Wirringen with around 450 Catholics belonged to the parish of St. Joseph. Since November 1st, 2014 the church belongs to the parish of St. Bernward in Lehrte.

For the 100th anniversary of the parish fair , the church , which is almost 74 meters above sea level , was fundamentally restored with funds from the sale of the former rectory (Marktstrasse 3) and with the great contribution of the parishioners. The original painting was partly restored, partly based on the style.

Much older than the church is the sandstone baptismal font from 1591, which was probably originally made for St. Nicolai.
