Loch Arkaig is in the Scottish Highlands situated freshwater lake . It is at Spean Bridge , about 15 kilometers north of Fort William and about five kilometers west of the Great Glen . Loch Arkaig is about 19 kilometers long and about 50 m ASL high. The maximum water depth is 109 meters.
The main tributaries are the Dessarry and the Pean, which run through the Glens , which are named after the rivers. They flow into Loch Arkaig in the west, not far from the town of Strathan . The Lochaber Mountains are to the north and the Locheil Forest is adjacent to the south. Starting from the east of Loch Arkaig, the river Arkaig flows towards Loch Lochy . The river passes Achnacarry in its course .
There are two islands in Loch Arkaig. The larger of them is called Eilean Loch Arceig . There is a ruined chapel on it. This island was used as a burial place by the Scottish Cameron clan . On the island still brooding 1908 osprey . This was the last Scottish breeding pair until this raptor species repopulated Scotland on its own from the 1950s. At the western end of the lake, the narrow single track road that runs along the north bank ends at Strathan . The end of the road is the starting point for hikers and mountaineers who want to reach the remote Knoydart peninsula on foot or who want to climb the surrounding mountains such as the Sgùrr na Cìche .
