geography

Achnacarry is approximately 15 miles north of the city of Fort William near the village of Spean Bridge. The Scottish Gaelic Achadh na Cairidh (field of fish trap ) describes the isthmus between Loch Lochy in the east and Loch Arkaig in the west.

During a visit, Queen Victoria noticed a low altitude above sea level and the natural forest, which becomes finer towards Achnacarry.

“As you approach Achnacarry, which lies rather low, but is surrounded by very fine trees, the luxuriance of the tangled woods, surmounted by rugged hills, becomes finer and finer till you come to Loch Arkaig, a little over half a mile from the house. This is a very lovely loch, reminding one of Loch Katrine, especially where there is a little pier, from which we embarked on board a very small but nice screw steamer which belongs to Cameron of Lochiel. "

Main article: Achnacarry Castle

The castle was built in 1802 in the style of the Scottish Baronial on the ruins of the old Achnacarry Castle. The castle is not open to the public, but a museum of the Cameron clan , which is located on the site.

The castle was used as a training camp for Allied troops from 1942 to 1945. British commandos , United States Army Rangers , commandos from France, the Netherlands, Norway, Czechoslovakia, Poland and Belgium practiced here with live ammunition, which led to losses, as well as damage to the castle by fire. In memory of the training of the Commandos during the Second World War, the Commando March, a "Speed March" between Spean Bridge and Achnacarry, is still held today.

On August 18, 1928, representatives of oil production companies met in Achnacarry Castle. They formed a secret cartel and agreed funding quotas. A contract, the Achnacarry Agreement or As-Is "Agreement , was agreed.
