Sankt Barbara is the Catholic church in the village of Büddenstedt in the Helmstedt district . It is located at 6 Kattreppeln Street and is named after Saint Barbara of Nicomedia , the patron saint of miners. The church belongs to the parish of Maria Hilfe der Christians based in Schöningen , and thus to the Wolfsburg-Helmstedt deanery of the Hildesheim diocese . The catchment area of the church includes the former political community Büddenstedt.

history

Before the Reformation , Büddenstedt was the seat of a Catholic pastor. The first mention of the parish comes from around 1220. It was under the archdeacon of Ochsendorf . In 1568 Duke Julius introduced the Reformation in the Duchy of Braunschweig-Lüneburg .

From 1935 the town of Neu Büddenstedt (later renamed Büddenstedt) was established as a replacement for the Büddenstedt planned for demolition. As early as 1939 Neu Büddenstedt had 610 inhabitants, including many Catholics employed in opencast lignite mining. The plans of the Vicarie Holy Family in Offleben to build a Catholic church in Neu Büddenstedt could not be implemented due to the outbreak of the Second World War. After 1945, the number of Catholic residents increased due to the influx of expellees from the eastern German territories and refugees from the Soviet occupation zone .

The St. Barbara Church was built in 1950/51, it initially belonged to the Vicarie Offleben. 1950 its foundation stone was laid, and on 19 August 1951, its consecration by Bishop Joseph Godehard making . In 1993, community rooms were added to the church.

In 1996 a pastoral care unit comprising the Catholic churches in Büddenstedt, Jerxheim , Offleben and Schöningen was set up. On March 1, 1998, the Helmstedt deanery, to which the church belonged, merged with the Wolfenbüttel deanery to form the new Helmstedt-Wolfenbüttel deanery. Since November 1, 2006, the church has belonged to the then newly founded dean's office in Wolfsburg-Helmstedt, which arose out of the dean's offices in Wolfsburg and the Helmstedt part of the dean's office in Helmstedt-Wolfenbüttel. Also on November 1, 2006, today's parish Maria Hilfe der Christisten emerged from the pastoral care unit . On March 3, 2015, the church in Offleben was profaned , since then the St. Barbara Church has been the easternmost church in the Wolfsburg-Helmstedt deanery.

Architecture and equipment

The church was built according to plans by Josef Fehlig , designed as a nave construction with a gable roof, and is around 132 meters above sea level . There are three bells in the free-standing entrance tower . The church has about 130 seats, plus the Marienkapelle open to the nave with 12 seats.

On the back wall of the chancel there is a statue that shows Jesus Christ as the risen in a halo . Below is the tabernacle . Four other statues show the Saint Barbara, the patron saint of the Church, and Joseph of Nazareth , the patron saint of workers, Liudger , the founder of the monastery of St. Ludgeri in Helmstedt, and possibly at the nearby Sommerschenburg born Bernward of Hildesheim . 14 pictures on the side walls show Jesus' Way of the Cross .

The organ , donated by the Braunschweigischen Kohlen-Bergwerke , was set up in 1951 by Hermann Hillebrand . The instrument has 15 stops on two manuals and a pedal . A confessional and the baptistery are located under the organ gallery. Your baptismal font , a gift from the Schöningen parish, was made from a column shaft from the Temple of Miletus that is over 2000 years old . The altar of the Marienkapelle was erected from parts of the high altar of the demolished monastery church Grafschaft .
