The Church of Sant Joan Baptista ( St. John the Baptist Church ) is a Romanesque church in the Catalan community of Palau-saverdera in the comarca of Alt Empordà in northeastern Spain . It serves the local Catholic parish as a parish church and belongs to the deanery ( arxiprestat ) Alt Empordà Interior in the diocese of Girona .

history

The church was built in the early 11th century and is first mentioned in a document from the monastery of Santa Maria de Roses in 1070.

The Església de Sant Joan consists of three naves with barrel vaults . The building is divided into four sections and has a central apse with two semicircular apses. The outer facade was designed in the Lombard style with arches and pillars - especially in the area of ​​the central apse. The side portal of the church was restored in 1981 in the style of historicism . The building was built on the ruins of an ancient Roman villa; Some of the building materials from this previous building were used in the church, including ceramic tiles on the northern wall and in the window area of ​​the apse.

Hermitage of San Onofre

On the territory of the parish there is a hermitage , which is first mentioned in 1448 and is dedicated to the Egyptian hermit Onofre (Onophrios).
