Franz Pauli

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Franz Pauli (born July 6, 1927 in Gleiwitz , Upper Silesia , † February 11, 1970 in Cologne ) was a German freelance artist .

Life

Franz Pauli was the son of Günther Pauli (1898–1947) and his wife Charlotte born. Everywhere (1892-1986). His father was a technical manager at the Gleiwitz industrial school in the classes for decorative crafts. As part of his artistic activity, he was involved in various exhibitions. Franz Pauli attended elementary school in Gleiwitz-Richtersdorf and continued his education at the grammar school in Gleiwitz. The family followed political developments with great unease. As a former lodge member of the Freemasons and as a committed social democrat, the father feared for his teaching post. While the father was interned after the Red Army marched in at the end of January 1945 and deported to Stalino, Franz Pauli spent the following months seriously injured in the hospital. In September 1945 mother and son left Gleiwitz for the west and found shelter first in Paderborn and later in Paderborn . In 1947, the father died of typhoid fever on the return transport from Soviet captivity in Frankfurt (Oder) , which Franz Pauli and his mother only found out much later.

After graduating from high school Theodorianum in Paderborn in 1949, from which he graduated with the Hebraicum, Graecum and Latinum, Franz Pauli first learned the painting trade, through which he came into contact with decorative wall paintings and restoration work. Because of his special talent, he was able to finish his apprenticeship early and in 1951 began studying at the Cologne factory schools . There he was a student of Friedrich Vordemberge until 1953 . From 1953 to 1957 he studied at the Düsseldorf Art Academy with Otto Pankok , Otto Coester and Robert Pudlich . In 1958, he also completed a teaching degree in art and biology, thereby also completing the Philosophicum . After taking the state examination, he asked to be released from school service in order to be able to work exclusively as a freelance independent artist.

Franz Pauli created an extensive, multifaceted work. His oil varnish pictures, prints, screen prints and three-dimensional objects that take up electrical circuits and investigate the connection between art, creativity, technology and human creativity as well as between art and cybernetics are to be emphasized. At the end of the 1960s he opened the 'Studio for Art and Cybernetics' in Cologne, where he carried out experiments and public performances on the subject of art and cybernetics together with the mathematician Roland Fuchshuber. The glass windows designed by Franz Pauli, which he designed for more than 120 churches at home and abroad, are better known and more visible to the public. Due to the current pressure to change within the Catholic Church, some of the churches in which Franz Pauli worked, and thus the works created there, are threatened in their existence.
