The place is older, however, a chapel already existed in Dorlar in 1150. In the same year the no longer existing royal court was built. The meaning of the name Dorlar is controversial. "Dorlar" means either a ducal camp , a battle castle , a barren corridor or a grassy area on a hillside (Celtic).

Dorler on the map Westphalia Ducatus

In 1350, 30 people lived in Dorlar. The population doubled by 1468. The village chapel was enlarged in 1358 for the first time. 229 years later, Dorlar received a parish. The parish was moved from Kirchilpe (then Yffelpe) to Dorlar in 1587. In 1645 Dorler was mapped on the Westphalia Ducatus map. The country road (today's B 511) between Fredeburg and Bremke was completed in 1839. The Dorlar train station on the railway line to Schmallenberg was opened in 1911. The cessation of the railway operation took place in 1991, whereby this u. a. for the transport of pipes for a gas pipeline was temporarily resumed. The dismantling of the tracks was carried out in 2004. Today there is a bike path on the track bed.

As part of the local reorganization , which came into force on January 1, 1975, the Dorlar community was incorporated into the new town of Schmallenberg with the villages of Dorlar, Kirchilpe, Nierentrop, Altenilpe, Sellinghausen, Berghof, Grimminghausen, Kuhberg and Twismecke.
