history

The Einhof Ebbinghof was first mentioned in 1284. Volkmar von Ebinchoven was a witness to a Grafschafter document. The manor belonging to Fredeburg Castle belonged to the Archbishops of Cologne, who let their Vogt live there. It has always been called the Foygedes or Voigedes Gut, after which the family of the free feudal man was nicknamed Viogedes or Vogt. There is no evidence of the existence of a farm in other sources. A second estate, the so-called Bolzen Hof, was mentioned before 1500.

Until the local reorganization in North Rhine-Westphalia, Ebbinghof belonged to the municipality of Wormbach. Ebbinghof has been part of the town of Schmallenberg since January 1st, 1975.

religion

Chapel of St. Laurence

The first chapel in the village was dedicated to St. Anthony the Hermit and St. Dedicated to Luzia and dates from 1610. It was built by the owners of the Vogtschen estate. After a change of ownership in 1888, a dispute began two years later between the new owner and the other villagers over the right to use the chapel at the Fredeburg District Court . The dispute ended on March 28, 1894. The district court ruled in favor of the plaintiff. In 1913 there was another change of ownership. To avoid further difficulties, the villagers then planned a new chapel to be built elsewhere. After a collection, the new chapel was built on December 9, 1915 on the previously acquired site. Since then it has stood in the center of the village and is dedicated to St. Laurentius . The new chapel was recreated unchanged from the old chapel, but also received a small entrance porch. The artistic altar was made according to a design by the Aachen cathedral master builder Josef Buchkremer .

tourism

In addition to agriculture, the inhabitants live from tourism. Major national events with several thousand visitors take place in the town on a regular basis. Since 1976 the mayor of Ebbinghof has been elected every three years at a village festival. All five courtyards offer vacation opportunities.

Bio-energy village

The climate protection prize of the city of Schmallenberg and RWE went to Ebbinghof in 2009. The place has been using solar energy (photovoltaics) and thermal energy (wood chips) for several years and recently also a biogas plant. The two wind turbines were dismantled again in 2014. The village currently produces more electricity than it consumes.

Ebbinghof is the first bio-energy village in North Rhine-Westphalia. With photovoltaic systems and biogas, the village not only supplies its own farms with electricity and heat, but also a school and the SauerlandBad in Schmallenberg and companies in Schmallenberg and Bad Fredeburg.
