Alfred Voß (born February 1, 1945 in Schmallenberg-Ebbinghof ) is a German energy scientist.

Life

After graduating from high school in Dortmund, Alfred Voß studied mechanical engineering at RWTH Aachen University from 1965 to 1970 . It was 1973 in Aachen with the work "approaches to the overall analysis of the human system, energy, environment" doctorate . After working as a research assistant at the Institute for Reactor Development at the Jülich Nuclear Research Facility (KFA) , he became deputy head of the KFA's System Research and Technological Development (STE) program group in 1973. In 1976/77 he worked at the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) in Laxenburg . In 1977 he became head of the system research and technological development (STE) program group of the KFA.

Voss received a 1983 reputation as a professor at the Institute of Nuclear Technology and Energy Systems (IKE) at the University of Stuttgart , in 1990 he became director of the Institute for Energy Economics and the Rational Use of Energy (IER) at the University of Stuttgart.

From 1991 to 1994 he was a member of the Enquete Commission “Protection of the Earth's Atmosphere ” of the German Bundestag and from 2000 to 2002 a member of the Enquete Commission “Sustainable Energy Supply under the Conditions of Globalization and Liberalization” of the German Bundestag. Since 1995 he has been a member of the Senate of the Hermann von Helmholtz Association of German Research Centers . Voss is also a member of the German Academy of Science and Engineering (Acatech) .

Alfred Voss is committed to his scientific work on the topic of sustainable energy technologies and energy systems. He is the research group leader of the research initiative "Power Plants of the 21st Century" (KW 21) launched in 2004. He is one of the two editors of the information platform Energy Facts .

Positions

Alfred Voss is a strong advocate of nuclear energy and advocates its expansion, both as a journalist and as a political advisor: " Only environmentally friendly atomic energy helps us to solve energy problems " In a special edition from ZEIT in 1977 he wrote: " Without the use of nuclear power the hunger for energy cannot be satisfied ”. On November 20, 2012 he was made an honorary member of the Kerntechnischen Gesellschaft (KTG). According to the chairman of the KTG, Astrid Petersen, he was appointed because “in his research, his public work and, last but not least, also in his political advice, he regards nuclear energy as an integral part of a reliable and sustainable energy supply for modern industrialized countries, and he is very persistent and independence for their long-term use in Germany " . In his lecture on this, Alfred Voß questioned the energy transition as a “way to a climate-friendly and sustainable energy supply” .
