Around the village is the nature reserve on the outskirts of Kirchrarbach .

Neighboring places

Neighboring places are Sögtrop in the north, Hanxleden in the southeast, Sellmecke in the south and Niederhenneborn in the southwest.

history

A sign on the tower masonry of the Church of St. Lambertus indicates that the first church was built in 1257. It is said to have its origins in a chapel from the 10th century. In local chronicles from the 19th century it is stated that the parish was established in 1225 as the center of the knight seats at Hanxleden and Sögtrop. There are no documents to prove this. In fact, only one chapel is given for Kirchrarbach in the Liber valoris of 1313 and it was not until 1368, when the county of Arnsberg was sold to the Archbishop of Cologne , that Kirchrarbach was officially designated as a parish.

Eight to nine farms can be identified since the estimates of the 16th century. Around 1819, 102 people lived in 13 houses in Kirchrarbach. The Dickhof, located a little below the town center, is specially marked in some old topographical maps. The number of houses rose only slowly until the Second World War , then much faster, to which newly designated building areas also contributed. Refugees and evacuees increased the population briefly after the Second World War. In the entire municipality of Rarbach (ten localities) the population rose to 1214 inhabitants by 1950 and reached the pre-war level in 1964 with 904 inhabitants.

In 1843 the political community Rarbach was formed, which consisted of the entire parish with ten places. This community existed until the communal community reform. On January 1, 1975, Kirchrarbach became a district of Schmallenberg.

Kirchrarbach is the parish of the Catholic parish St. Lambertus. The patronage rights are said to have had initially the lords of Hanxleden, later the nobles of Grafschaft and then the barons of Fürstenberg . From the 17th century it was owned by the Grafschaft monastery , which also occupied the pastoral position with Benedictine monks from 1636 to 1804.

In 1795 the rectory burned down, with almost the entire archive being destroyed. In 1813 the first organ was bought. A way of the cross already existed in the 18th century, this was rebuilt in 1859/60 and the Kreuzkapelle was built on the Steimel. The sandstone pictures of the Stations of the Cross were given a new place in the church in 1971 to protect them from the weather. In 1990 new station pictures were built. The church was expanded in 1912 and renovated in the early 1970s.

Until 1904, Oberhenneborn also belonged to the parish, which has always been larger than the parish. This year the place received a parish vicarie and its own clergyman. In 1919 Oberhenneborn became a branch parish with its own asset management and in 1921 an independent parish vicarie. After the Fredeburg pastor was commissioned with pastoral care in Kirchrarbach in 1995 and pastoral care in Oberhenneborn in 1997, both parishes have belonged to the pastoral association of Fredeburger Land since 2003 .

education

In the village there was a primary school for the places of the former municipality of Rarbach until 2014. In 1970 this replaced the two elementary schools in Kirchrarbach and Oberhenneborn.

economy

Until the 20th century, Kirchrarbach was dominated by agriculture. There is no longer a full-time farmer. There were also smaller craft and trading companies. The Freimuth company, which was founded in 1964 and manufactures warehouse and conveyor technology, is the largest employer of today's businesses. The inn in the village was also a post office until 1994. There are several holiday apartments for tourism. A bank has a branch.

societies

Most of the Kirchrarbach associations are associations of the Kirchrarbach parish, such as the Schützenbruderschaft, the SGV department or church associations. The Rarbachhalle of the shooting club is the largest hall in the Rarbachtal. The sports club was created in 1974 through a merger with the Oberhenneborn sports club.
