Osterwald is a district of the city of Schmallenberg in North Rhine-Westphalia .

The village is located three kilometers southwest of Bödefeld on the northern slope of the Hunau around 600 m above sea level. The Osterwaldsiepen flows through the village. The landscape protection area Offenlandinsel Osterwald lies around the village .

history
In 1338, Osterwald was first mentioned in a document by Count Gottfried IV . In 1427, five farms were listed in the tax register at that time. In 1645 Osterwalt was mapped on the Westphalia Ducatus map. Immigration leads to an increase in population from the 18th century. In 1874 there were 101 people living in 16 houses in Osterwald. However, the place only got a paved road around 1900. In 1951 Osterwald got a school. However, this was closed again in 1970 as part of the school reform. Until the municipal reorganization in North Rhine-Westphalia, Osterwald belonged to the municipality of Bödefeld-Land . Osterwald has been part of the town of Schmallenberg since January 1st, 1975.
religion
The St. Antonius Chapel, built in 1873/74, is located in the village. Before that, the old dilapidated chapel was demolished in 1867.
