history

The place Almert (then Alden bracht ) was first mentioned around 1300 as a fiefdom of the Counts of Arnsberg . In 1338 the noblemen of Grafschaft enfeoffed the estate. Three years later, Johannes von Grafschaft sold the Grafschaft monastery a pension from his farm in Aldenbracht. In 1416 the monastery of Conrad von Grafschaft and his son Craft acquired the entire property around Aldenbracht for 100 Rhenish guilders. Early clues about the size of the place can be found in an appraisal register (used to collect taxes) for the year 1543. According to this, there were four appraisers in “Vff der Almerth”; the number should have agreed with the farms or houses that existed at the time.

In 1543 Almert belonged to the Bilstein office , like several places in today's town of Schmallenberg . After disputes between the monastery and the von Fürstenberg family , Kaspar von Fürstenberg had to leave Almert to the Grafschaft monastery. The transfer was contractually regulated on November 20, 1602. In 1645 Almart was mapped on the Westphalia Ducatus map.

The first complete list of Almert residents from July 31, 1717 recorded 25 residents. In 1895, according to the entry in the trade and business address book of the Province of Westphalia, 18 residents lived in Almert.

The place belonged to the municipality of Oberkirchen until the municipal territorial reform in North Rhine-Westphalia. Almert has been part of the extended town of Schmallenberg since January 1st, 1975.

Wild bison near Schmallenberg-Almert

In December 2017, the bison herd of the bison wilderness stayed on the Rothaarsteig near Almert and ensured that Almert appeared in the media. The bison grazed on site and also went to the silage stored there . This also resulted in the crossing of the county road between Grafschaft and Oberkirchen. A speed limit of 50 km / h was set to prevent collisions. On December 19, 2017, a car collided with a bison crossing the road. There was only a slight sheet metal damage. The bison also survived and ran away. The bisons at Almert attracted onlookers. Numerous photos and videos were taken. In January 2019, bisons were again around Almert.
