Westernbödefeld is a district of the town of Schmallenberg in North Rhine-Westphalia .

geography

location

The village is located 450 m above sea level around two kilometers northwest of Bödefeld. Through the village leading state road 776. On the outskirts the provincial roads L 776 / L 740. The cross Gellinghauser stream runs through the town. In the center of the village, the Wallensiepen stream flows into the Gellinghauser stream.

history

Old school

Westernbödefeld (then known as Western Bodefeld) is mentioned for the first time in 1314. In Westernbödefeld there was "An der Linde" an execution site and an open court chair.

Until the municipal reorganization in North Rhine-Westphalia, Westernbödefeld belonged to the municipality of Bödefeld-Land . Westernbödefeld has been part of the town of Schmallenberg since January 1st, 1975.

chapel

During the Thirty Years War , the place was almost completely destroyed by looting and pillage. The plague also contributed to entire families being exterminated. The survivors took the courage to rebuild their houses. They built a chapel in the upper part of the village and dedicated it to the apostles Peter and Paul.

Around 1716, the Virgin Mary became the new patron saint of the chapel. In 1945 the old chapel had become dilapidated and too small, so that it was rebuilt in its current location in 1952 and consecrated in 1953.
