history

Entrance to Latrop

In 1257 a Johannes von Latroph was named in a document for the first time. In the 15th century, most of the farms above Oberfleckenberg, including Latrop, were probably destroyed due to feuds; the place fell desolate . More than 100 years later, in 1617 Abbot Gabel Schaffen of the Grafschaft monastery visited the destroyed site. He then made the decision to repopulate Latrop. A legal dispute between the town of Schmallenberg and the Grafschaft monastery between 1618 and 1630 initially prevented the settlement. However, the monastery won the process and began repopulating the place. In 1897 the first school was built in Latrop. Around 70 years later (1968) it was closed again. Until the local reorganization, Latrop belonged to the county of Grafschaft, and since January 1, 1975 to the town of Schmallenberg. In the summer of 2007 the 750th anniversary of the first mention was celebrated in Latrop as part of a festival week.
