The Great Head between Latrop in the Hochsauerlandkreis and Schüllar in the Siegen-Wittgenstein district , North Rhine-Westphalia ( Germany ) is 740.8 m above sea level. NHN high mountain in the Rothaargebirge and after the Albrechtsberg ( 770.8 m ) the second highest mountain in the southwestern Winterberg highlands .

The Big Head lies on the seam line of the Hochsauerlandkreis in the north and the Siegen-Wittgenstein district in the south. It is located in the Sauerland-Rothaargebirge nature park between Schmallenberg (Hochsauerlandkreis) in the northwest and Bad Berleburg (Siegen-Wittgenstein district) in the southeast. The closest villages or hamlets are the Schmallenberg districts of Latrop (2.4 km north-north-west), Schanze (4.2 km north-north-east) and Jagdhaus (5 km west-north-west) as well as the Bad Berleburg districts Kühhude (3.3 km north-east), Schüllar (4th floor ) , 6 km southeast) and Wingeshausen (5.2 km southwest).
Natural allocation
The Großer Kopf belongs to the natural spatial main unit group Süderbergland (No. 33), in the main unit Rothaargebirge (with Hochsauerland ) (333) and in the subunit Winterberger Hochland (333.5) to the natural area Östliche (Kühhuder) Rothaar (333.52). The landscape drops to the southeast into the natural area Odebornsenke (333.10).
Neighborhood surveys
The western-north-western foothills of the Großer Kopf , which is wooded with deciduous and coniferous trees, include the Große Bamicke ( 614.5 m ) and the Kleine Bamicke ( 661.4 m ) to the west . To the north, beyond the Latrop valley, lies the Höhe ( 693.8 m ) with the west-southwest adjoining Schmallenberger Höhe ( 677.6 m ). In a north-easterly direction, the landscape leads along the Rothaarkamm ridge over the Saukopf ( 716.3 m ) to the Albrechtsberg ( 770.8 m ).
Watershed and rivers
A section of the Rhine-Weser watershed runs over the Großer Kopf . The water of the rivers that strive northwards from the mountain spur, such as the Klotzlochsiepen as the southern Schladebach tributary, flows through the Latrop , Lenne and Ruhr into the Rhine . Opposite this, that of the south-facing Westerzebach runs through the Trüfte (also called Trufte ), Eder and Fulda into the Weser .
Protected areas
Directly southeast of the summit of the Großer Kopf are areas of the 38.4 km² nature reserve Rothaarkamm on the Grenzweg, founded in 2004 (NSG no. 329598). To the northwest, there are those of the 21.02 km² nature reserve Schanze Forest Reserve, founded in 2008 (NSG no. 389939). The mountain lies in the core area of the Fauna-Flora-Habitat- Area Schanze (FFH-Nr. 4816-302), which is 61.62 km². On both sides of the ridge are areas of the Rothaargebirge landscape protection areas, founded in 1994 - Hochsauerlandkreis-Teilbereich 1 (LSG-Nr. 323981), which is 140.53 km² and in the north reaches up to the summit, and Rothaargebirge - Siegen-Wittgenstein district (LSG- No. 390204), which is 299.43 km² and extends to the lower parts of the southern mountain flanks.
Traffic and walking
A few kilometers from the Großer Kopf , coming from the federal highway 480 , the district road 39, which runs from Bad Berleburg to Kühhude, passes the mountain as a dead end in the east. From the national road 236 in branches Fleckenberg the cabins street from that is called and beyond the county boundary K 42 of Fleckenberg by cabin after Wingeshausen leads and passes the mountain far west; In Fleckenberg, Latroper Straße branches off the B 236 as a dead end street to Latrop . A few meters northwest past the summit of the Großer Kopf , the mountain path of the Rothaarsteig runs in a northeast-southwest direction , which leads from the hamlet of Kühhude over the Saukopf , over the summit of the Großer Kopf and then further west past Großer Bamicke and Kleiner Bamicke to the forest path intersection ( 632 4 m ) to the refuge million bank and is there on the valley trail meets.
