Early clues about the size of the place can be found in an appraisal register (used to collect taxes) for the year 1543. According to this, there were five taxpayers in “Sellinghaußen” (Thonis Schulte seine servant, Johann Ferbers, Tilman Buelick and Dorpscheiper).
In 1819 Sellinghausen lived a total of 70 people in 10 houses. The number of houses rose to 25 houses by 1865. The slate mine opened in Sellinghausen in 1920 . In the absence of minable slate, the mine was closed again a few years later. Sellinghausen belonged to the municipality of Dorlar until the local government reform. Since January 1st, 1975 Sellinghausen has been part of the new town of Schmallenberg. The center of the town was redesigned in 2007.
