Arpe is a district of the city of Schmallenberg in North Rhine-Westphalia .

The village is located around 6 km northwest of Schmallenberg at an altitude of 350 to 370 m above sea level. The Arper Mühle is around 1 km outside the town center. The Arpe flows through the village. The streams Mühlenbach and Heimke flow into the Arpe in the center of the village. In the immediate vicinity, other streams flow into the Arpe.

Church in Arpe

The name Arpe means "water-rich valley". It probably comes from the Celtic .

A found in 1959 Feuersteinbeil from westischem Flint witnessed a very early settlement as early as the Neolithic period . In 1348 a Conrad Hasenporten sold 2/3 of his tithe in Adorpe.

In 1476 one of the oldest families in Arpe, the Vogelheim family, moved from Vogelheim to Arpe. The Rüssmann, Sasse (Heimes), Möller, Schoerte (Schauerte) and Homerg (Hömer, Hömberg) families also belong to the von Arpe families that can be traced back for centuries. Early clues about the size of the place can be found in an appraisal register (used to collect taxes) for the year 1543. According to this, there were 10 appraisers in “Arpe”; the number should have agreed with the farms or houses that existed at the time.

Arper mill

The Arper mill was first mentioned in a document in 1555. It was owned by the elector of Cologne and was leased from Bilstein. It became the property of the Sapp family in 1823. In 1645 Arpen was mapped on the Westphalia Ducatus map.

The former old school building is still today next to the church. After this building was no longer sufficient for teaching purposes, the new school was built in 1937. Quarry stones from the nearby quarry were used for construction , and the building was decorated with half-timbering. In 1965 the school was expanded with an extension. Until 1975 there were two classrooms here, 1st to 4th and 5th to 8th school year. After school service had to be discontinued in 1975, the school building went into private ownership.

Until the municipal reorganization in North Rhine-Westphalia, Arpe belonged to the municipality of Berghausen . Since January 1st, 1975, Arpe has been part of the town of Schmallenberg.

The exact age of the Arper Church is not known. The church was built in the Renaissance style and dedicated to the patron St. Antonius the hermit. The oldest part probably dates from the 17th century. Regular services on Sundays and public holidays have been held since 1917. The branch church of St. Antonius and its own cemetery are administered by the parish council of the branch church Arpe. The Arpe branch parish today belongs to the parish of St. Cyriakus Berghausen .

Events

Arpe is a carnival stronghold in the Schmallenberg urban area. In the village hall there are national events several times a year, such as B. the beach party (May), which is very well known in the Sauerland, the dive bar party or the Ballermann snow party.
