Bracht is a district of the municipality of Brüggen in the district of Viersen with around 6,700 inhabitants (as of November 30, 2016). It is about four kilometers from the city center. Bracht is often referred to as " Dohlendorf ". To the site include the Honnschaften Alst (Jralst) Angenthoer, Boerholz (Boers), Heidhausen (Hede), Hulst, Steve Send and Stieg.
history
Mentioned in writing for the first time on the back of a document from 1116 as "BRATH", Bracht was already settled in the Celtic times. The region was known as Mühlgau under the Carolingians . Bracht was therefore also referred to as "Mühlbracht". In 1317 Bracht and the honors Alst, Angenthoer, Boerholz, Heide, Heidhausen, Stevensend and Haus Schleveringhoven were part of the office of Brüggen, the northernmost office in the Duchy of Jülich-Berg . In 1798, the new canton of Bracht was created by the French administration. In 1801 the entire area came to France as the Roerdepartement . Bracht was the seat of the canton's cantons when the left bank of the Rhine belonged to France. The canton Bracht included the Mairien (mayor's offices) Bracht, Kaldenkirchen, Breyell, Schaag, Boisheim, Brüggen-Born, Amern St. Anton, Amern St. Georg, Burgwaldniel , Kirspelwaldniel , Dülken, Steyl (NL) and Tegelen (NL). In 1815 the Rhineland was assigned to Prussian and Brüggen and Bracht to the newly created district of Kempen . On June 9, 1830, the dilapidated steeple of the Breyeller Church collapsed.
On March 21, 1879, the government decreed that the vacant Mayor's offices in Bracht and that of Bruggen should be combined into one. This was lifted in mid-1919.
In autumn 1944 the Maas-Rur position was expanded; this line extended the west wall , the northern end of which was at Heinsberg . After the end of Operation Blackcock (January 1945) and after the start of Operation Grenade , the Wehrmacht cleared the Maas-Rur triangle between Venlo, Roermond and Wassenberg on 27/28. February without a fight to avoid lockdown. On March 1, 1945, a US Army combat group (in the rear of the Maas-Rur position ) advanced via Niederkrüchten-Brüggen-Bracht-Kaldenkirchen to Venlo.
On January 1, 1970 , Bracht was incorporated into the neighboring municipality of Brüggen.
The documents of the Brachter community archive are in the district archive of the Viersen district in Kempen .
The district hit the headlines in 2016 when the alternative medicine "Biological Cancer Center" was closed after a series of deaths.
coat of arms
The old coat of arms of Mühlbracht showed the patroness of the Bracht parish church St. Mariae Himmelfahrt in red and green clothes on the left side and the yellow lion of Geldern with a fiefdom stand with the black lion of Jülich . This old coat of arms was already the seal of a jury in the 12th century and was considered one of the most beautiful in Germany.
Events
A weekly market is held on Weizer Platz every Thursday. During the year, various festivals such as the ecumenical parish festival, jackdaw festival, mill festival, rifle festival and the fair are celebrated in Bracht . In addition, there was a Santa Claus market in December, which did not take place in 2011. Since then, there has been a replacement for the Brachter Mill Christmas on the 2nd weekend in Advent. There is a carnival parade on Carnival Saturday , which is the first parade in the region. The KKG Brachter Wasserratten organizes a children's session.
Infrastructure
In addition to four kindergartens, there are also two schools in Bracht: the Bracht location of the Brüggen comprehensive school and the Catholic elementary school for grades 5 to 8. Other religious institutions in the city are the Catholic parish of St. Mary's Assumption, the Evangelical Church Community of Bracht-Breyell and the Baptist Association of Evangelical Free Churches . These churches have two parishes, one Protestant and one Catholic.
There is a citizens 'hall and several senior citizens' meetings. For older people there is also the St. Franziskus retirement home, which is housed in the former Schleveringhoven castle. In addition, the Brüggener Tafel e. V. put up a board for people in need .
There is a single gym, a double gym and an outdoor sports facility with artificial turf, on which the gymnastics and sports fans (TSF) Bracht play.
Adjacent to Bracht is the Brachter Forest , a 1328.17 hectare nature reserve on which the Brüggen-Bracht ammunition depot was located until 1996 , before large parts of it were acquired by the North Rhine-Westphalia Foundation for Nature Conservation, Heritage and Cultural Care in 1998 and cycling and hiking trails have been equipped.
The Brachter brick manufacturer Gebr. Laumans Ziegelwerke was decisive for the local structure and the connection to the railway network in 1911 . The location has been preserved to this day with regard to the occurrence of the well-known "Tegelen clay" in the Brachter Forest for roof tile production. The roofing tile and clay industry made the village of "Bracht" one of the richest communities in the region.
