The Brachter Forest is a 1328.17 hectare nature reserve in North Rhine-Westphalia northwest of Brüggen .

Geographical location

The Brachter Wald is located between the German-Dutch border in the northwest, the place Bracht (Brüggen) in the northeast, the place Brüggen in the southeast, and the Elmpter Schwalmbruch in the south.

Natural structure

The area is located in the Lower Rhine Plain and is part of the natural area Schwalm-Nette-Platte .

Ammunition depot

From the end of World War II around 1948 to 1996, the site was used by the British Army of the Rhine under NATO . The 3 BAD (3 Base Ammunition Depot) set up the area as an ammunition depot Brüggen-Bracht , with approx. 200 halls and storage areas, 4 loading stations, 88 km of paths and roads and 15 km of rail network. With up to 45,000 t of conventional ammunition, it was at times the largest ammunition depot in Europe.

Nature reserve

Large parts were acquired in 1998 by the North Rhine-Westphalia Foundation for Nature Conservation, Heritage and Cultural Preservation and equipped with cycling and hiking trails. Since 2000 the area has the status of a nature reserve.

The nature reserve is part of the EU bird sanctuary " Schwalm-Nette-Platte with Grenzwald and Meinweg ".
