The Grutbend nature reserve is located in the area of the cities of Nettetal and Viersen in the Viersen district in North Rhine-Westphalia .
The approximately 24.60 hectare area, which was placed under nature protection in 1984 , extends northwest of the core town of Viersen along the Nette . The state road L 29 runs along the northern edge of the area and the L 387 runs along the southern edge. The A 61 runs north and the L 29 runs east.
The protection is provided to maintain a balanced natural balance , to secure the diversity and beauty of the landscape, the siltation zones of eutrophic waters, the swamp forests and the preservation of habitats for protected aquatic plants , plants of the reeds , the scrub forests and the habitats of birds. The old oak and beech wood are of outstanding importance for the protection of species as breeding and nesting trees or as nurseries for bats .
