The Tote Rahm nature reserve is located in the North Rhine-Westphalian municipality of Kempen in the Viersen district . It is around 98 hectares and was first placed under protection in 1929. The area is located in the area of the Schadbruch, on both sides of Tönisberger Straße between the districts of St. Hubert and Tönisberg near the Waldschenke restaurant, which is known as an excursion restaurant.

The nature reserve (NSG identification VIE-002) is - with the exception of three smaller peripheral areas - largely congruent with the somewhat smaller FFH area Tote Rahm (identification DE-4504-302). This makes it part of the European Natura 2000 network of protected areas .

description

Historically, it is about 10,000 years old post-glacial fen area , which was formerly known as the wettest moor of St. Hubert. The area was so saturated that a complete amelioration (drainage), as in other areas, was not possible. The area was called "dead" a long time ago because it was not usable, so it was "worthless" for economic use. Several field names in the area refer to this fact.

The Tote Rahm can now be described as a richly structured moist forest complex with several oligo-mesotrophic calcareous waters. Remarkable are the stoneworts -Vegetation, residues of cutting -Röhrichten and extended bach accompanying alder ash swamp forests . Since the beginning of the 20th century, however, the groundwater level has dropped by up to two meters, so that some tree roots are dry.

The area of the nature reserve belongs partly to the city of Kempen, the district of Viersen, several farmers and private individuals.

In the east of the Toten Rahm the Orbroich nature reserve in the city of Krefeld is directly connected . In the west, the Elsdonker Rahm area borders directly on the Tote Rahm.
