The Elmpter Schwalmbruch nature reserve is located in the area of ​​the municipalities of Brüggen and Niederkrüchten in the Viersen district in North Rhine-Westphalia .

The approximately 295.91 hectare area, which was placed under nature protection in 1964 , extends southwest of the core town of Brüggen along the Schwalm , directly on the state road L 373 on the northern edge. The state border with the Netherlands runs on the western edge of the area , the A 52 runs south .

The nature reserve is part of the EU bird sanctuary " Schwalm-Nette-Platte with Grenzwald and Meinweg ".

There are various types of biotope in the nature reserve, including a moor and the largest juniper heather in the left Lower Rhine. In Elmpter Schwalm break breed among other Bluethroat , Stonechat , Water Rail , Woodlark , Little Grebe and reed warbler . Beavers and smooth snakes can also be found here .
