Mühlgau

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Mühlgau was a Carolingian district in the Duchy of Lorraine .

Geographical location

The Mühlgau lay in the area between Maas and Niers , which extends from the Lower Rhine Bay to the Lower Rhine lowlands . In the north it was bordered by the Düffelgau , in the east by the Gildegau , in the south by the Nievenheimer Gau and in the west by the Maasgau . It was more than 50 km long and about 20 km wide. The largest part of the area is now in Germany, precisely in the urban area of Mönchengladbach and in today's districts of Heinsberg , Neuss , Viersen and in the south of the district of Kleve . A small part to the west - to the right of the Meuse - is now part of the Netherlands .

history

Copy of Otto I's document from 966

The Mühlgau was first mentioned in a document as comitatus Moilla in 837 when Ludwig the Pious was divided . In the Treaty of Verdun in 843 it was assigned to the Middle Kingdom of Lothar I and in the Treaty of Meerssen in 870 it came to Eastern Franconia . After further changes of territorial affiliation, it belonged to the Duchy of Lower Lorraine in the middle of the 10th century. In an exchange deed sealed by Otto the Great between the Lorraine Count Immo and the Marienstift zu Aachen it says in 966 in pago Mulehkeuue in comitatu Eremfredi (in the Mühlgau in the county of Eremfred).
