Location of Amern in the area of the municipality of Schwalmtal in the district of Viersen

The district of Amern is located on the Lower Rhine in the west of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia . With around 8,000 inhabitants, it belongs to the municipality of Schwalmtal in the district of Viersen ( administrative district of Düsseldorf ).

history

According to excavations, Amern was first settled in the Neolithic Age.

From 966 AD the area that was then known as Mühlgau was under the rule of Count Eremfried. The Counts of Kessel replaced this rule around 1082 until the end of the 13th century. During this time they were responsible for the property of the Cologne Cathedral Chapter in Amern - St. Anton and the Xantener Stift in Amern - St. Georg . 1305-1801 the two parts Amern next Dilkrath, Waldniel were Kirspelwaldniel and Lüttelforst the jülichen Office Bruggen assumed.

Due to high war expenditures, the Brüggen Office was pledged to the County of Moers until 1494 . This period of occupation meant a great loss of property and finances for the communities. In the battle for the Schwalm line in 1793, the Prussians and the Austrians were able to prevail. After the French counter-attack, it was decided in the Peace of Campo Formio in 1797 that the left bank of the Rhine would become French. Amern - St. Anton and St. Georg were assigned to the canton of Bracht.

After the fall of Napoleon I and the Congress of Vienna , the areas passed into Prussian rule. In 1816, the canton of Bracht was assigned to the district of Kempen as part of a new administrative regulation . In the district of Kempen, Amern Sankt Anton and Amern Sankt Georg formed two separate mayorships , with the municipality of Dilkrath also belonging to Amern Sankt Georg . Dilkrath was incorporated into Amern Sankt Georg in 1928.

Under the National Socialist rule , Amern Sankt Georg (Oberamern) and Amern Sankt Anton (Unteramern) were finally merged to form the municipality of Amern in 1936 . In 1956 Amern gave the two honors Geneschen II and Ungerath to Waldniel.

Incorporation

On January 1, 1970, Amern was merged with Waldniel . The new community was named Schwalmtal .
