Wankum is a village in the municipality of Wachtendonk in the Kleve district in North Rhine-Westphalia . Until 1969, Wankum was an independent municipality in what was then the Geldern district .

geography

The village of Wankum comprises the southwest half of the municipality of Wachtendonk. In addition to the actual village of Wankum, the settlements Aerbeck, Harzbeck, Langdorf, Müllern and Vorst also belong to the locality. In the south, the Nette forms the natural border between the village and the town of Nettetal and the municipality of Grefrath in the Viersen district . In the southwest of the village is the Wankumer Heide recreation area with several quarry ponds .

history

Wankum was first mentioned as Wanchheim in a document on the Wankum land peace from August 28, 1279 . The place name is derived from the Franconian Wankheim (home in the meadows and pastures).

Since the 19th century Wankum formed a rural community in the mayor's office Wankum (since 1939 Wachtendonk office) in the district of Geldern in the administrative district of Düsseldorf . On July 1, 1969, Wankum became part of the municipality of Wachtendonk through the law on the reorganization of the district of Geldern .
