Belfeld ( Limburgish Belvend ) is a village and was formerly a municipality in the Dutch province of Limburg . Since its incorporation in 2001, Belfeld has been the southernmost district of the city of Venlo with 5,535 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2018). Neighboring towns are Tegelen , Steyl , Kaldenkirchen and Reuver .

Surname

Possibly the name of the village goes back to the Germanic name "bala" (white), which means "white-colored moor".

history

The earliest mention of Belfeld comes from the year 1326. It is a document in which the name of a scion of the Gelder noble family Van Broeckhuysen is mentioned. He was given the task of building and living in the Jülich fiefdom in Brüggen . He had to give up his property and possessions in "Belven". The place Belfeld was mentioned under several names: "Beblevelt", "Bollevelt" and "Belsveldt". From 1800 "Belfeld" is always written.

The center of Belfeld was badly damaged in World War II . After the war the center was relocated.

Belfeld is located in an area with extensive clay deposits . In Roman times there were already pottery and brick kilns in what is now the neighboring village of Tegelen . In 2000 the last roof tile factory in Belfeld was closed.
