Hermann Jakob Dingelstad (born March 2, 1835 in Bracht ; † March 6, 1911 in Münster ) was a German Roman Catholic theologian and bishop of Münster .

Life

Dingelstad came from a humble background. After church sponsorship, he passed the Abitur in 1855 at the Collegium Augustinianum Gaesdonck near Goch , together with the later Saint Arnold Janssen and then studied theology at the Royal Theological and Philosophical Academy in Münster . In 1859 he was ordained a priest and then studied philosophy, which he completed with a doctorate and the state examination for the higher teaching post.

After completing his studies, Dingelstad was initially a high school teacher at his former school in Gaesdonck, where besides him a. a. the future Bishop of Strasbourg Adolf Fritzen also taught and Dingelstad's successor in office as Bishop of Munster Felix von Hartmann was his pupil. After the closure of the Collegium Augustinianum in 1873 as a result of the Kulturkampf , Dingelstad was able to work as a teacher at the grammar school Antonianum in Vechta , since the Grand Duchy of Oldenburg had not joined the Prussian Kulturkampf.

1889 Dingelstad was from Leo XIII. appointed Bishop of Munster , Archbishop Philipp Krementz of Cologne donated his episcopal ordination to him on February 24, 1890. Dingelstad appeared to the Church as a suitable candidate because he was unaffected by the clashes of the Kulturkampf. During his tenure, however, he represented an ultramontane orientation and strengthened the implementation of Catholic social teaching . Simultaneously with his ordination, the Catholic-Theological Faculty of the Academy in Münster awarded him an honorary doctorate.

During his studies, Dingelstad became an active member of the Catholic student association Germania Münster in the KV . He was also an honorary member of the Catholic student association KDSt.V. Ascania Bonn in the CV .
