Johannes Bernhard Brinkmann , also Johann Bernhard Brinkmann (born February 4, 1813 in Everswinkel , † April 13, 1889 in Münster ) was a German Roman Catholic theologian and bishop of Münster .

Life

The house where he was born, the “Bishop's House”, is still in Everswinkel on the west side of St. Magnus Church. At the request of the father, the only son should learn the woodworking trade after attending primary school. But Johann Bernhard resisted, as well as the military service.

After studying theology and ordained a priest in 1839, Brinkmann had a straightforward career. He was chaplain in Beckum for thirteen years and from 1854 to 1858 rector of the Marian pilgrimage in Kevelaer , where he founded the World Priests Congregation of Kevelaer . In 1857 he was elected vicar general of the diocese of Münster and in 1870 its bishop . He received his episcopal consecration on October 4, 1870, the then Archbishop of Cologne and later Cardinal Paulus Melchers .

In the course of the Kulturkampf he was declared deposed and charged by Prussia in 1875 for violating the Kulturkampf Laws. He lived as the “confessing bishop” officially in the Netherlands and de facto from 1871 to 1878 in Leuth near the Dutch border in the rectory of the parish of Sankt Lambertus. He retained indirect influence on events in his diocese through his confidants (e.g. the deposed district administrator of Münster Heinrich von Droste zu Hülshoff ). Bishop Brinkmann was only able to return to Münster after the Kulturkampf Laws were repealed and after nine years of exile. He died after a short sick leave in 1889 and was buried in the choir of the cathedral in Münster .

In Everswinkel on the church square there has also been a memorial since 1913.
