Leo Peters

Leo Theodor Peters (born September 9, 1944 in Kaldenkirchen ) is a German archivist , historian , author and professor of history .

life and work

Leo Peters attended the Fichte-Gymnasium in Krefeld until 1965 . He then studied philosophy, German literature and history at the Universities of Münster and Bonn , especially historical regional studies with Franz Petri and Edith Ennen , and received his doctorate in 1971 with a dissertation on the history of the von Schaesberg family . In addition to the German edition, it also appeared as a book in the Dutch Maaslandse Monografen series .

After two years of legal traineeship at the main state archive in Düsseldorf and at the Hessian state archive in Marburg , he passed his archive assessor exam there . In 1973 he became head of the district archive in Kempen . As an archivist he discovered u. a. a letter of indulgence from Johannes Gutenberg as the cover of a book; this is now part of the permanent exhibition of the Gutenberg Museum in Mainz . From 1978 to 2009 he was head of the school and culture department of the Viersen district .

Peters belongs to numerous historical associations, is chairman of the historical association for the Lower Rhine and a member of the " Society for Rhenish History ". He is chairman of the board of trustees of the Adalbert Foundation . He wrote numerous books and essays on the history of the Rhineland and, as a scientist, “promoted the understanding of regional history like no one else”. Peters has been the publisher and author of the Viersen district's homeland books since 1976, which mainly deal with historical topics. The 1995 edition was named the best of the genre by the Deutscher Heimatbund . For around two decades since 1976, Peters was responsible for editing the academic series of the Viersen district.

As a representative of the district of Viersen, he was a member of the 11th and 12th Landscape Assemblies, the highest organ of the Rhineland Regional Council, from 1999 to 2009 . He also represented the district in the cross-border Euregio Rhine-Maas-Nord and in the district assembly of North Rhine-Westphalia . He took on various functions at the CDU and in the city council of Nettetal . He is a member of the Christian Democrats for Life , was chairman of the NRW regional association from 1988 to 2000 and was an assessor on the federal executive committee.

Peters is honorary professor at the history seminar of the Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf with a teaching position for regional history of the Rhineland . In 2008 he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon .

Leo Peters is married, has two sons and lives in the Nettetal district of Kaldenkirchen.
