Ulrich von Hehl (born October 19, 1947 in Viersen ) is a German historian and university professor.

Life

Ulrich von Hehl is Catholic and attended the municipal high school in Viersen from 1958 to 1959 , and the high school at Moltkeplatz in Krefeld from 1959 to 1966 . After completing his military service, he studied history and German studies from 1969 to 1974 at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn , receiving his doctorate in 1977 under Konrad Repgen . From 1977 to 1992 he was managing director of the Commission for Contemporary History in Bonn , where he had been a research assistant since 1977. In 1987 von Hehl completed his habilitation in Medieval and Modern History. From 1989 to 1990 he was a deputy professor at the University of Augsburg . In 1992 he was appointed to a professorship at the University of Leipzig. There von Hehl held the chair for modern and contemporary history at the University of Leipzig . He retired in spring 2013.

His academic focus is on research into German Catholicism, the Weimar Republic , National Socialism and the history of universities and science. He is a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the House of History in Bonn and the Commission for Contemporary History. He is also Deputy Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Horst Springer Foundation for Modern and Contemporary History of Saxony.

In 2019, the fourth and final volume on the history of the city of Leipzig , edited by von Hehl, was completed. It covers the period from 1914 to the present.
