Rhenish city atlas
Rhenish City Atlas is the series title of a series of city atlases of historical and present-day cities mainly in the area of the North Rhine-Westphalian part of North Rhine . The series, initiated by Edith Ennen and started in 1972, is published by the Institute for Regional Studies and Regional History (formerly: Office for Rhenish Regional Studies) of the Rhineland Regional Council . By 2019, more than 100 volumes had been published in 21 deliveries .

As a city in the sense of the Altas project, in addition to places that were granted city charter in the Middle Ages , also those places that were elevated to cities up to the key date 1961 in the later modern era. The large-format city atlases, which essentially adhere to the guidelines for the creation of city atlases adopted by the Commission for Urban History of the International Association of Historians , always have the same content structure. In the text part, all aspects of urban history structures and developments are presented according to a keyword scheme. In principle, the original sources were used for the texts and they are provided with evidence that meets scientific standards .
The text section includes information on the history of the settlement , topography , constitutional and administrative history , church history , school, educational and cultural history , medical history , Jewish history , economic and social structure and statistics .
The map section always includes the historical city plan based on the original cadastre from the beginning of the 19th century, a modern city plan based on the German basic map , an overview map of the municipality / mayor's office from the beginning of the 19th century, the topographical survey of the Rhineland and Prussian first survey (1836-50 ) of the early 19th century, the Prussian Neuaufnahme (1892–1912), a topographic map 1: 25,000 and a current edition vertical aerial photo . For industrial cities , an additional building usage map of the 20th / 21st Century, which shows the respective urban and economic development at the time of high industrialization in Germany . In addition, there are usually also historical city maps and historical and current edition city views .
